In today’s fast-paced world, it’s essential to have a workspace that fosters productivity and minimizes distractions. A minimalist desk setup can help you achieve just that. In this post, we’ll share some tips for building a minimalist desk setup that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
My Minimalist Desk Setup
I’m on my own journey to building a minimalist desk setup. I started with a brand new IKEA desk build and implemented a number of the steps listed in this post. When it comes to desk setups, just remember, the space has to work for you so make it yours.
Start with a Clean Slate
Before you begin building your minimalist desk setup, start by clearing your desk of any unnecessary clutter. Take everything off your desk and sort through it, deciding what you really need and what can be put away or got rid of. By starting with a clean slate, you’ll have a better idea of what you need to create a streamlined workspace.
Choose the Right Desk
The first step in building a minimalist desk setup is selecting the right desk. A minimalist desk should be simple, functional, and sturdy. Consider a desk with clean lines and a neutral colour palette, such as a white or natural wood finish. A desk with built-in storage can also help keep your workspace organized and clutter-free but this isn’t essential as storage can be added later.
Select a Comfortable Chair
Your chair is just as important as your desk when it comes to creating a comfortable and productive workspace. Choose a chair that’s ergonomic, supportive, and comfortable for long periods of sitting. Consider a chair with a minimalist design that complements your desk and fits your budget. Below I’ll put a link to the chair I have in my setup. I bought it from Amazon for a very reasonable £65. It’s a really comfy chair and offers good back support.
Invest in Quality Lighting
Good lighting is essential for any workspace. Invest in a minimalist desk lamp that provides sufficient light for your tasks. Choose a lamp with adjustable brightness and colour temperature settings for optimal lighting conditions. You may also consider LED light strips or a standing lamp to create ambient lighting in your workspace. I have both LED strips and an LED lap on my setup. The Lepro desk lamp sits on my desk and offers really strong colours across the full RGB scale. The is then a Govee light strip stuck to the underside of the wall panelling on the gaming wall. I will link both of these products below.
Organize Your Desk Accessories
Once you have your desk and chair set up, it’s time to organize your desk accessories. Choose a few essential items, such as a clock, speaker, and a plant, to personalize your workspace. Obviously, add any items you feel are essential to boosting your productivity but try to keep your desk accessories minimal and functional to avoid cluttering your workspace. I added an essential oil diffuser to my desk, which features a cool flame effect and releases nice smells, I will link to it below.
Use Desk Organizers
Desk organizers can help keep your workspace clutter-free and organized. Choose a few organizers that fit your workspace and style, such as a minimalist desk tray or a desk caddy. Use these organizers to store your pens, pencils, and other office supplies. I bought a pack of desk drawer organisers from Amazon. They were the perfect size for the IKEA Alex drawers which I have under my desk top. I use them to store all sorts of items, from stationery to charging cables.
Keep Your Desk Clean & Tidy
Now this last point is often easier said than done, especially when life gets a bit hectic but it is a key step to maintaining a minimalist desk setup. It’s important to keep your desk clean and tidy. Develop a cleaning routine that works for you, whether it’s wiping down your desk at the end of each day or deep cleaning your workspace once a week. By keeping your desk clean and tidy, you’ll be able to focus on your work and be more productive.
Building a minimalist desk setup takes time and effort, but the end result is a workspace that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing. By following these tips, you’ll be able to create a streamlined workspace that fosters productivity and minimizes distractions.
